CEEPO BIKES AT BOCA HAWAII! Looking for a new feel, a new quickness, a new responsiveness in a bike? Check out the new CEEPO bicycle. Pro triathlete Tim Marr is performing outstandingly on his new VENOM frame, and enjoying every moment of its success. Now selling at BOCA Hawaii, call now (808-591-9839) and inquire about this high quality triathlon machine: www.ceepo.com CEEPO bikes were conceived by Tanaka Nobuyuki as he raced Ironman distance triathlons and the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. Tanaka wanted to develop a superior and super fast bike that would be designed specifically for the demands of triathlon. So, in 2003 he embarked on creating a triathlon bike that would be manufactured entirely to his own specifications. Just four short years later, CEEPO bikes have gone from concept to full production and introduction to the Asian-Pacific market, to now being represented at the 2007 Ironma World Championships by nearly 30 top triathletes.

BOCA SCOOPS UP SLOTS AT Ironman 70.3 Hawaii Rough waters and a windy bike made it a tough day to get in your zone at this year's Half-Ironman in Kona. But Boca athletes persisted and rose to the occasion. And some even got Championship Ironman slots! Who received a slot on Saturday and is going to Kona in October?... Dave Stackhouse, Wil Wong, Jeff White, Susan Nixon, Wendy Minor, Hina Torres de Sa, Wendy Miki, Jim McDiarmid, John Flanagan, and Laura Springer. Who qualified previously?... Wil Yamamoto (Brazil Ironman), Maggs Morris (Ironman Arizona), Mariane Uehara Marr (Lavaman), Rachel Ross (Ironman Kona 07), Katherine Nichols (Wildflower), and of course Pro Triathlete Tim Marr (Ironman China)-- if we've missed anyone, please let us know! Congrats to all.
SWEET SUCCESS IN SOUTH AMERICA
20 people set out from Hawaii for "Mission-Brazil-Ironman" (9 competitors, plus support team) The athletes had been training since early in the year, preparing themselves physically and mentally for the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and the 26.2 mile run. For three of them (Lee Ann, Troy, Glen), it would be their first experience at the challenging distance, for others, it would be their 19th (Raul)! All finished and almost all had PRs, and one is going to Kona (Wil)! We call it a successful mission! Congratulations to: Wil Yamamoto 9:37:36 (3rd in age group), Glen Duvall 10:26:34, Ryan Leong 10:57:01, Raul Boca 11:19:45, Eric Sanders 11:28:20, Troy Kiepper 11:46:48, Joy Secritario 13:07:20, Karen Sanders 14:34:30, and honeymooner Lee Ann Hernandez (14:45:49)--now it's off to the Amazon!... Mosquito repellent, anyone?
BOCA SOUP Just how many BOCA athletes can you actually fit in a jucuzzi?? Athletes attended the always fun Kona Training Weekend (May 2 - 4) on the Big Island in preparation for the Ford Honu 70.3 Ironman on May 31st. After a great ocean workout, athletes unwind at the hotel pool. Ingredients: 30 -40 Boca athletes, 1 Duda shaved, 1 Mariane for sweetness, 1 extra large hotel hot tub Directions: Because Boca athletes tend to be exceptionally tough and stringy, they must be thoroughly tenderized with long, windy and hilly bike rides, immediately followed by a hot and barren brick run. Further tenderize by subjecting to vertical kicking, swim intervals and mass starts. At the onset of cramping, you know the tenderization process is complete. To prevent overflow, slowly add the tenderized triathletes to the hotel hot tub and soak. Serve warm as triathletes may become stiff and whiny when cold. For best flavor, add 1 Duda (shaved) for additional spice, and 1 Mariane for sweetness. BOCA SOUP is naturally low in fat and is an excellent choice prior to early morning 15 -20 mile runs! (Recipe by Ryan & Bonnie Leong)
BIKEFACTORY/JAMBA JUICE LANIKAI TRIATHLON
New run course, great weather and an awesome turnout put this year's race on the map as one of the best ever! Tim Marr and Marion Summerer took the top male and female positions, but it was all the first-timers that stole the show. A group of ladies in pink from Kauai flew over just to participate in the event and were full of cheers and fun energy. Participants young and old were out to enjoy the sprint distance triathlon held on April 13th at Kailua Beach Park, and it created a great day for everyone involved. Thanks to all the voluteers and sponsors! Results: Overall - Divisions - Relays
TIM MARR AT IRONMAN CHINA Tim Marr completed his 2nd ever Ironman and performed like a true champion. Exiting 3rd out of the water, Tim was in postion to have the ride of his life. He captured the lead on the second half of the bike and maintained that lead through the first 8 miles of the run. Passed by the eventual winner, Sabatschus, Tim held on to his 2nd place position all the way until the last mile of the race. South Korean triathlete, Hoon Park, passed Tim with less than 500 meters to go. Tim held on in spite of the tremendous exhaustion he was experiencing and crossed the finish line moments later to enjoy his amazing 3rd place overall finish! Tim was the 1st American to cross the finish line and also won a spot in the 2008 Ford Ironman World Championship in Kona in October. Can't wait to cheer this local boy on in his own stomping ground!
OLD NEWS...
IROQUOIS POINT ISLAND CLUB WEEKENDFEST Kids and Adults gave it their all on March 28-29. The Youth event on Saturday was the most wonderful display of playful and determined energy. There was a 7 - 10 year old race followed by a more challenging 11 - 14 year old group of athletes. So much fun to witness! Later in the afternoon, the 5K runners got their moment in the sun. Jacob Valeriano and Buffy Whiteman were the first place male and female finishers. Athletes stuck around for the awesome tunes of Kapena who gave an hour concert in the early evening. The next day, it was time for the big event! The sprint distance course was fast and furious. A bit of wind at the last 2 miles of the bike course challenge the riders, and the new out and back run course spiced things up to create a fun day for everyone. Congratulations to overall winners, Tim Marr and Marion Summerer and to all the athletes who participated.
RIDING UP HALEAKALA
On March 9th, thirty Boca athletes accepted the challenge to climb up breathtaking Haleakala. The organized ride began in Paia, 38 miles from the top. Riders enjoyed more than cooperative weather and were in awe of the views. The challenge tested their minds and bodies. Rider Michele Henry did not know whether to laugh or scream at times: My thoughts were like a pendulum, swinging from "this is incredible, I'm above the clouds", to "What the hell am I doing", to "You can do this"--and my last thought, "I'm going to strangle you Raul if you don't stop singing" to "This is an absolutely incredible experience". Michele's final question?: Why do the gods always put the hardest climb at the end? Thank you to all the support staff and coaches for a great weekend.
WHAT'S NEW WITH TIM MARR? Hawaii's own Professional Triathlete, Tim Marr, is training strong for his upcoming season. His 2007 4th place finish at the Korea Ironman was a great indicator of good things to come. Training here on Oahu and often on the Big Island, Tim is mapping out his progress in order to peak at the right time. Check out his plans and updates at www.timmarr.com. Let's support him as he prepares for 2008. And if you see him on the road, give him a thumbs up or a high-five!
SPINFEST 2008 SUPPORTS EPILEPSY FOUNDATION
The 4th annual Spinfest, held at the Honolulu Club on Ward Avenue, set up camp outside this year. All 40 spin bikes were brought down to the street level and beautifully arranged for anyone who wished to participate. Raul was there to lead 12-hours of classes from 6am to 6pm. Erika Eberhart and Sarah Field accompanied Raul for all 12-hours this year (your turn next year, Betsy!) To make the marathon class flow easier, the last 3 hours were enhanced with a live salsa band--its was awesome and kept the athletes moving! The event raised more that $5000 for the Epilepsy Foundation of Hawaii. Thanks to all who helped!
CLEARWATER PERFORMANCES The Ford Ironman World Championship 70.3 took place on November 10th in Clearwater, Florida. It's made up of some of the best athletes in the world. There were 1,624 athletes from 52 countries registered for the race of which 443 (27.3%) are women and 1181 (72.7%) are men. Hawaii's own Pro triathlete Tim Marr and Age Group Champion Rachel Ross accepted the challenge of the Florida course and performed well in spite of an extremely busy course. Drafting is not allowed but was difficult to avoid with so many athletes in the race. Tim Marr finished 27th overall which unfortunately includes a six-minute time penalty (4:00:20). Rachel, too, had a strong race, finishing 5th in her age group (4:33:34). Such talent we have here in Hawaii! KAILUA BEACH 10K RUN RAINED OUT! A first ever for BOCA HAWAII--a canceled race! In the history of putting on races for the last 12 years through rain, wind, contaminated waters and road construction, BOCA Hawaii has never had to send its athletes home. Our core of dedicated race workers were on the course in Kailua at 3am Sunday morning setting up cones and aid station tables. We were working on the finish line through a constant stream of rain, but no lightning had appeared for the last hour, so we were hoping that once the sun came out, enough of a calm would exist for us to send off the 350 runners to enjoy the race. Faithful runners showed up, but alas, the ongoing rain had created huge pot hole-like puddles that it would have made it risky to see one's footing--just one among many problems the rain storm created. Besides, it would have been difficult to get around the stalled car stuck at the entrance of Lanikai, two-thirds immersed under a river of water. So Race Director, Raul Boca, decided to cancel-- a first ever for the "rain-or-shine" leader who never makes excuses. Mother Nature wins this round!
DICK EVANS KEEPS RIDERS CHALLENGED The 2007 Dick Evans Road Race took place on Sunday September 2nd. The 112-mile ride around the island is one of the final grueling cycling challenges of the year. All the Hawaii cycling teams were present, working with their respective team members to ensure a win by one of their own. In the end it was Thomas Novikoff who crossed the line first for the men, and Brie Wee for the women. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the BOCA Aid Station on Olomana a success. The athletes really appreciate us out there with cold drink and smiling faces as they travel to their last 10 mile stretch towards the finish. In spite of a few unfortunate crashes, it was as great day for the riders--a chance to challenge themselves in the last road race of the year. Race results can be found at www.bikeshophawaii.com. TIM MARR IS 4TH IN IRONMAN KOREA Pro Hawaii Triathlete Tim Marr, in his first ever Ironman distance race performs amazingly!
It was a very difficult day with extreme conditions. The course could not have been hotter, but Tim had a solid race and lead the race for the first 3 hours. He finished 4th Overall and was first in the Professional Americas Division. There were 8 Ironman champions in the race and Tim managed to only get beat by three of them. The field had 20 professional men and he was the only first time pro racing at the distance! Way to go Tim!
JAMBA JUICE XTERRA MOUNTAINMAN TRIATHLON August 25th was the day the athletes performed to win spots for the Xterra World Championship. The Jamba Juice Xterra MountainMan at Kualoa Ranch is a qualifiier for the big race in Makena, Maui, and these triathletes were put to the test. With an afternoon start time to catch the highest tide for the swim, the athletes also had to contend with very warm weather conditions. Congratulations to all who participated and for those who won a qualifier spot, you may contact Ann Mickey with Xterra at: info@xterraplanet.com PHOTOS - RESULTS
BOCA HAWAII STAGE RACE Stages 1, 2 & 3 are now complete! Riders tested their cycling skills and the determination was inspiring. BIKEFACTORY NORTH SHORE TRI 2007 Great job to those who competed in this June 17th race RACE RESULTS are at www.timelinehawaii.com - congratulations athletes!
WHO IS GOING TO KONA? In spite of hot conditions, athletes performed beautifully at the Ford Ironman 70.3 on June 2nd. Withstanding a swim start with no concrete start gun, flat tires, baking hot temperatures, and other individual hurdles presented race day, BOCA athletes stepped up to the challenges of the big day and performed with grace and stamina. Always working their way to the finish line, a BOCA athlete never gives up--especially when a 2007 Kona slot is at stake! All slots are well deserved and some are very pleasant surprises! So, which BOCA athletes are going to Kona?... Julia Pae, Wendy Miki, Laurie Sloan, Wendy Minor, Mati Sapolu, Jason Nixon, Jim McDiarmid and Rachel Ross (please let us know who we've missed!) Congratulations! (The year is not over yet, so surely there will be more athletes winning slots to Kona)
BIKEFACTORY/JAMBA JUICE LANIKAI TRIATHLON - April 15, 2007 A terrific turnout for this year's race. Weather and road construction finally cooperated to give participants a smooth course to display their athletic talents on. Thank you to all who participated, and to all who took the time and energy to volunteer. Finally, a newly paved Kalaheo Avenue gave the athletes a smooth path to KMCB! A great turnout of motivated athletes inspired all who watched. Terrific job everyone! RACE RESULTS - RACE PHOTOS
IROQUOIS DRAWS YOUNG & OLD The 2007 Iroquois Point Island Club Triathlon (March 24, 25) embraced the participation of moms, dads, and kids, as well as everyone in between. Race Results. Absent from this year's race were the rainy conditions and 6 inch water puddles experienced at last year's triathlon. The wind challenged athletes on the bike and run, but overall, the day was truly enjoyable. Tim Marr and Rachel Ross, familiar local favorites, took home the winning medals on Sunday's race, but is was the island Keiki that truly won the hearts of everyone on Saturday. The Keiki race included kids ranging from ages 7 -10 and 11 - 14. The determination, struggle and joy of the task at hand were colorfully expressed on the faces of the children. The raw emotion reminded us all of the reasons why we race.
PERFECT DAY FOR TIME TRIAL The 2007 Jaco Physical Rehab Castle to Hanauma Time Trial was blessed with great conditions. Race Results. With the wind being calm and the temperature mild, the only thing that was fierce was the competition. 135 riders started their journey at Maunawili Elementary School and set out to perform to the best of their ability. The 12.8 mile course was won overall by Mike Zagorski for the men, and Kara Dreflak for the women. This course is always challenging due to the combination of hills and flats. A rider must know when to push and when to pace themselves. A big Mahalo to Jaco Van Delden Rehab, Bikefactory and Wahoo's Fish Tacos for helping to make the event a great one! See you April 1st at the Tantalus Time Trial, which will be organized by Tradewinds Cycling Team.
BOCA & BIKEFACTORY AT THE ALOHA RUN EXPO
BOCA HAWAII & the BIKEFACTORY made a great showing at the 2007 Aloha Run Expo at the Blaisdell Center. For three days the BOCA staff was available to the public, answering questions about training & racing and sharing the love we have for the sport of triathlon. Supportive BOCA members even stopped by to go for a "spin" on the turbo trainers and the Lemond Spin Bike provided by the Bikefactory, creating a fun, glowing atmosphere that drew people to the booth. Everyone was excited for the first official running race of the year. Many BOCA athletes start of their season with the Aloha Run--good luck everyone!
FIRST CYLING RACE OF THE YEAR: MOKULEIA TIME TRIALRace Results
The first bike race of the season attracted more than 140 riders out to the North Shore on Sunday February 11 for 20 Kilometers of all out riding. One by one riders were sent off to test themselves against the clock. BOCA athletes made a great showing with 20+ athletes participating in the event. Eduardo and Ray won first and second place in the Masters 35+ division (also finishing with the 2nd and 4th fastest times overall!). Next, cyclists will be preparing for the Jaco Physical Rehab Castle to Hanauma Time Trial on March 4th--good luck!
SPINFEST, A HUGE SUCCESS! By Erika Eberhart
The third annual “Spinfest” was held at the Honolulu Club on January 26 th , 2007. This 12-hour studio cycling marathon fundraiser was led by instructor and OCC member Raul Boca at the Honolulu Club on January 26 th to benefit the Epilepsy Foundation of Hawaii. All proceeds raised by this outstanding event go to the Epilepsy Foundation of Hawaii which provides direct services to individuals with seizure disorders. This foundation is a private, nonprofit agency, whose mission is to increase public awareness of epilepsy and to build a sense of community, enabling persons with epilepsy to participate fully in the community at large. Overwhelming support of the Spinfest this year yielded more than $5000 for the foundation! Raul was named "Volunteer of the Year" in 2006 by the Epilepsy Foundation for his fundraising efforts. His selfless donation of time and energy was appreciated by all participant. The only Spinfest rider who accompanied Raul on all 12 hours of the journey was Sarah Field! Congratulations to Sarah for her accomplishment, and big mahalos to Sarah for her support of this fundraiser! Hope to see you all there in January 2008!
Tim Marr, Hawaii's Pro Triathlete, is enjoying the payoff from training right. Placing
10th overall in the 2006 Ironman World Championships 70.3 in Clearwater, Florida, has made him a happy man! He finished the race in 3:58:39 (swim: 24:06, bike:2:09:17, run 1:20:22), in spite of getting a rough start. Tim was a little late getting to the race site, and while the other athletes were making their way to the water, Tim was still racking his bike in transition. Nevertheless, he made it on time for the gun to go off and had a good swim. Unfortunately Tim experienced a crash on the bike while trying to avoid an unexpected and unofficial car on the course. But even with the set backs, which can mentally take a toll on one's concentration, the ever tenacious Tim proceeded to pass athletes on the run. Running an average pace of 6:09, Tim kicked it into gear and placed top 10 in one of the most competitive fields around. Tim enjoyed his success, but then journeyed off to Australia for the ITU World Championship Long Course Triathlon in Canberra, Australia on November 19th. Tim was the first American and 19th overall! Doing great Tim! Can't wait to see what's in store for 2007!

BOCA ATHLETES ROCK at ironman 2006
Congratulations to the BOCA Athletes who perfomed at the 2006 Ford Ironman World Championship! One can never predict what the race conditions will be race day, but this year's Kona Ironman seemed to provide an excellent playground for our family of triathletes. Working hard for this day, training and supporting one another and following the advice of Coach Raul Boca, these athletes approached the day with confidence and vigor. While all the performances are inspirational, two are truly outstanding. Wil Yamamoto (9:33:08--and that's with a 3 minute penalty!) and Rachel Ross (10:05:58)came in as the first and third Hawaii Athlete overall (Rachel was first woman). Other amazing performances were: Uilani Pauole (12:00:15), Brian Goodyear, (15:13:59), Laurie Sloan (15:38:28), Steve Colon (12:46:21), Wendy Minor (14:22:26), and James McDiarmid (DNF - missed bike cut off by 7 minutes!) We are so proud of all of you!
MARR-velous - PART ii
Congratulations to Tim! He is the ITU Pan-American Long Distance Champion! And, he set a course record for the swim! This highly motivated athlete finished 2nd overall and 1st American in the Grand Columbian Triathlon - the 2006 Pan American Long Distance Elite Championships on 9/16/06.
Tim competed on a course that covered a vast area of land in the North Central Washington area. This 141 mile course
crosses through three counties: Grant, Lincoln and Okanogan county (Swim 4K: Banks Lake, Bike 120K: Grant and Lincoln Counties Run 30K: Along the Columbia River in Okanogan County and Colville Indian Reservation) More to come from this amazing performer and his great adventure, as soon as we can catch up with him! RACE RESULTS - PHOTOS (mahalo to Allan Hicks for photos)
MARR-velous!
BOCA Coach Tim Marr's win at the July 23rd Tinman Triathlon in Honolulu, was just a warm-up for the following weekend's performance. Mr. Marr competed like a true champion at
The 2006 Vineman Ironman 70.3 Triathlon on July 30th in Sonoma County, California. Formerly known as the Half Vineman Triathlon, this event has become one of the most popular and highly competitive triathlons in the world. It is one of four 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13.1 mile run triathlons in the United States which will be qualifiers for the 2006 Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. With a 24:53 swim, Tim was first out of the water with legend Simon Lessing! (for someone who completed his first 2.4 mile Waikiki Roughwater Swim at age 5, this is a not-so-surprising show of talent for Tim) On fire on the bike, Tim kept his momentum and finished with the lead pack. Holding a strong position on the run, Tim eventually finished 6th overall (4:04:03)! No other triathlete in Hawaii has been so succesful in a professional field. This Mililani kid is making big waves in the pro circuit. Great job Tim--we are so proud of you!
Candyland Keiki Triathlon 2006 - September 16, 2006 -- RACE RESULTS Island Keiki strutted their stuff at this year's Candyland Triathlon. They swam loops in the wave pool (of course, no waves at time of swim), biked loops around perimeter of Hawaiian Water Adventure Park, and then ran their little hearts out within the confines of the park. Each finisher was greeted with a candy lei and hugs and cheers from adoring parents. It was a great day for families looking for a healthy outlet for kids. Thank you to all who participated! Time to get ready for the Keiki Championships --go get 'em, kids!
STILL GOT IT!
Congratulations to another awesome BOCA coach, Mr. Ray Brust, who is having a great summer! Ray recently won a 3rd place finish in the Cascade Cycling Classic Stage Race in Bend, Oregon (July 12 - 16). After days of races, his accumulative successes got him a 3rd place overall finish in the Masters Division against 100+ competitors. This tops off a series of summer wins for Ray. Before leaving for Oregon, he was the day's champion at the July 1st Pineapple Hill road race on Oahu. The 84 mile race consisted of 6 loops of challenging Pineapple Hill on the North Shore. Other wins in the last month include: 1st at the Aloha State Games Road Race (56 miles) on June 18 and 2nd at the State Mountain bike Championships at Kualoa Ranch on June 25. Cycling is a part of Ray's everyday life and has been ever since he began riding at age 14. Ray shares his love of cycling through his endless devotion to the beautiful sport as a coach, race course consultant, mechanic and competitor. Cycling is a healthy and environmentally friendly activity, and if we all applied just a little of Ray's enthusiasm and humility to our daily lives, this world would be a better place. At forty-something, this cyclist has still got it! Racing with Passion!
FELLOW BOCA ATHLETE MIKE NISHIMOTO INSPIRES US WITH HIS LANIKAI RACE EXPERIENCE : Mike Nishimoto continues to inspire us with his amazing spirit. After suffering from a bike/car accident a few years ago that left him partially paralyzed, Mike returns to the sport he loves--and we love having him with us! He tells us about his race experience at the 2006 Lanikai Triathlon turned Duathlon...
"It was an overcast day in Hawaii . Anticipation was high considering this was the second triathlon of the year. Most triathletes weren't thinking of the race, but the conditions of the water. Weeks before, Hawaii was hit with a major storm, drenching the islands for about 30 days causing numerous sewage floodings and broken sewer pipes. Millions of gallons of sewage waste was pumped into the ocean, and one person fell into the Ala Wai Boat Harbor causing him to contract the flesh eating virus. Few days later he died. Fortunately the race director decided to modify the sprint triathlon to a duathlon. I was relieved not have to worry about the possibility of getting a life threating infection in the water, but now worried about surviving the race. My strongest event, the swim, was changed to my weakest event, the run. I knew the Lanikai Hill was going to be a challenge, but now I have to climb it twice. I was thinking about pulling out, but instead decided to go ahead and give it a go"... (Click here for rest of story!)

HALEAKALA, HERE WE COME!
Ambitious members of this year's Hawaii Cycling Training were geared up for the March 12th target ride up Haleakala, aka "the beast" . It is BOCA Hawaii's 6th time assisting athletes with this awesome endeavor on the beautiful island of Maui. Not to be confused with the bicycle race "Cycle to the Sun"--a race which our own Ray Brust has been the champion of more than once-- this BOCA event is simply a day of climbing fun. The majority of the participants started the ride at the very bottom from the small town of Paia, while others take advantage of a drop off point further up the mountain. No matter where you begin, all are struck by the intense beauty of the ride. Vibrant green pastures, strikingly proud and erect pine trees, and whispering clouds set the scene and fill the senses of all who appreciate pure beauty. It is quite an accomplishment and all who accept the challenge develop a new respect for "the beast".

SPINFEST & SHARON'S RIDE,
A SUCCESS FOR EFH
Thank you to all who helped support the 2nd Annual Spinfest for Epilepsy, and the 4th Annual Sharon's Ride, Run & Walk. In an effort to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation of Hawaii (EFH), Raul led a room full of athletic supporters in 12 hours of consecutive spinning. The event was held on January 27th at the Honolulu Club and was open to the public. The fun began at 6am and continued on through to 6pm. All proceeds will go to EFH which provides direct services to individuals with seizure disorders. Its a private, nonprofit agency, whose mission is to increase public awareness of epilepsy and to build a sense of community, enabling persons with epilepsy to participate fully in the community at large. The event raised more than $3500 for EFH, so thank you to everyone who participated! Sharon's Ride & Walk, which expanded this year to include a 5K run into Diamond Head Crater was equally successful, with a nice crowd participating in all events. Raul was named "2006 Volunteer of the Year" by the Epilepsy Foundation for his fundraising efforts and received a beautiful trophy which is proudly displayed at the BOCA shop.
BOCA ON COVER OF ATHLETES HI! Check out BOCA Hawaii on the new cover of Athletes HI magazine. Looking to spread our wings and share the news with island athletes, we want all of Hawaii to know about the wonderful network of athletes, programs and races BOCA Hawaii has developed and become a part of. Thanks to a wonderful staff and great clients, we are looking to grow in even more creative ways in 2006. BOCA Hawaii will be assisting in key ways with the new Honolulu Triathlon race set to happen on May 14th; we will be training and hosting a group of athletes wishing to enjoy a South American Ironman in Brazil; and we will be expanding with more fun fitness classes in our BOCA Training Center. So let's enjoy our passion for training and for life!
A NEW YEAR, NEW ATHLETIC GOALS--LET'S GET REAL! -- Time to start planning and executing that plan for the new year. Athletes are amazing people. Once someone gets the fitness bug and incorporates athletics into their daily life, they are changed individuals. They are more focussed and tend to enjoy life more because they feel good about themselves. They are positive people and, with the proper balance, are also successful in non-athletic areas of their life. At least that's been our experience with the athletes we encounter at BOCA Hawaii. Training can be time consuming, but for those who have figured out how to fit it into their lives, the payback is significant. Our dedication to fitness and the amount of time we exercise weekly may vary from person to person, but a common denominator exists among those dedicated--they are real. Training and racing puts you in touch with a part of you that you cannot fake. You can't cheat yourself in a race. You either did your homework in order to perform race day, or you didn't. And that's what athletes love about challenges. So let's get real this year. Let's be thoughtful about the goals we choose and let's make things happen this year that we used to only dream of! Happy New year everyone!
2005----------------------------------------------------- THE CHALLENGE of THE HONOLULU MARATHON -- CONGRATULATIONS BOCA ATHLETES! You did it! Thank you for sharing your post-marathon stories at the end of the year BOCA POTLUCK
Time to run! Its time for that great opportunity in Hawaii to run through the Christmas lights of downtown, past the hotels and beaches of Waikiki, up and over Diamond Head, out to Hawaii Kai, back to town, past the magnificent homes of Kahala Avenue, in order to cross that glorious finish line at the end of Kapiolani Park. Its a long day's journey that sends you through an array of emotions and physical reactions. Every athlete is aiming for one kind of athletic goal or another, but all sharing in the blood, sweat and tears of the same 26.2 mile run. Boca athletes have been preparing since August and are ready for the December 11th challenge. Good luck to all of you!
MOUNTAINMAN FUN
It was a weekend of sheer outdoor fun and challenges. All four races of the Nov 19th weekend went without a care--well, maybe just a little frustration. The weather was agreable but rain from previous days left lots of sticky mud to contend with on the bike course. Still athletes had smiles on their faces (Really! Check out www.actionshots.com to see!) Our personal highlight was the Keiki Fun Run. The little athletes ran their hearts out on the beautiful Kualoa Ranch course--it was terrific! Thank you to all the participants and volunteers. After 11 years this race is still attracting such a wonderful crowd of people.

Bursting with excitement, kids from ages 7 to 14 swam, biked and ran in the confines of the Adventure Park This is the 3rd annual race at the park, and the 1st Keiki Triathlon for BOCA HAWAII. BOCA HAWAII MEETS CANADA IRONMAN!
For the past several months a team of BOCA athletes, under the direction of Raul Boca, has been preparing to compete in the Canada Ironman in Penticiton, BC. They trained hard and diligently, were consistent and supportive of each other, and on performance day, it all came together for each and every one of them! All BOCA athletes crossed the finish line and are now worthy of calling themselves a Canadian Ironman finisher. We are so proud of the dedication and spirit of this group. The conditions started our great for the day, but as time went on, the wind and heat on the bike and run course created tough physical and mental challenges. However, BOCA Iron athletes remained strong and persevered! You are our Ironman heros! Great job! IRONMAN CANADA BOCA FINISHERS

RAUL SPINS FOR EPILEPSY
Coach and BOCA Hawaii Director, Raul Boca, completed a 12-hour SPINFEST at the
Honolulu Club on January 14th in an athletic effort to raise money for the Epilepsy
Foundation of Hawaii (EFH). EFH provides direct services to individuals with
seizure disorders. Its a private, nonprofit agency, whose mission is to increase
public awareness of epilepsy and to build a sense of community, enabling persons
with epilepsy to participate fully in the community at large. Open to the public,
interested participants were encouraged to come join Raul as he led class after
class from 6am to 6pm. An appreciated donation of $20 was offered by spin enthusiasts
and they were allowed to spin for as long as they wished--or as long as they
could last! Cool tunes helped inspire the athletes to move on hour after hour.
With only a 5 minute break here and there, Raul amazingly completed the 12 hours,
and with a smile on his face! His enthusiasm managed to raise more than $3000.
Thank you to those who enjoyed the event and thank you to Raul for his creativity
in connecting a fun workout with a great cause

MOUNTAINMAN 2004 celebrates 10 years at Kualoa Ranch
-- Thank you for all who participated! It was an awesome weekend!
The original of the Mountainman series of races, the Pflueger Honda Mountainman
is still Oahu's largest off-road triathlon. Since 1995 the Mountainman has challenged
and inspired its adventurous athletes and is now celebrating 10 years of success.
Kualoa Ranch has always been the Mountainman's safe haven and we are thankful
for the site's breathtaking beauty, unique terrain, and its great staff of caretakers.
To thank participants Race Director Raul Boca has turned this birthday party
into a weekend of fun, organizing a 10K Trail Run, a 20K Mountain bike race,
the Sour Punch Keiki Fun Run, and of course, the ever popular Pflueger Honda
Mountainman Triathlon. Check out race apps in Athletes HI magazine or come down
to the BOCA Headquarters at 330 Cooke St. Or sign up online at www.active.com.
We are looking forward to a fantastic weekend of outdoor experiences that the
whole family can enjoy. Happy Birthday Mountainman!
Olympic
Triathlete Visits BOCA
BOCA HAWAII was honored to host Olympic Triathlon bronze medalist Susan Williams
at the Boca store at 330 Cooke Street on Thursday, October 21st, 2004.
Ms Williams shared her amazing athletic journeys, answered questions from our
interested crowd, and passed around the actual Bronze medal she won for all
to see and hold. Susan glowed as she decribed the Olympic race experience, her
daughter's presence at the awards ceremony, last year's Olympic Trials in Honolulu,
the upcoming World Cup in April, and how she became America's first triathlon
Olympic medalist. It was a great chance to meet an Olympian! Susan went to middle
school in Honolulu at Aliamanu. Thank you Susan--best of luck to you in the
future!
(Susan is center wearing lei and holding gold medal in hand!)
